building blocks
notes from presentation:
- a modular typeface
-not intended for display
-geometric grid system
-abstract
-repetition
man vs machine
-i like how its simple and straight to the point
-a number created by geometric shapes
-the geometric themes of the number 4 not only just makes up the background but the typography "more" i think this was a good way of incorporating the two
Mark richards
i really like how this typeface turned out because i just thought it was really unique and abstract it works well as a coherent series. If you saw one letter by itself you might not be able to figure it out but as a set they all help each other to make the alphabet more legible
the reason why this one intrigued me was because i like the fact that all the letters can be pieced together and fit together like a puzzle. there's a right amount of spacing between each word which still makes the typeface readable. The fact that its black and white helps us read it better two because the contrast between the white from the black background helps it be much more distinctive
My typeface i created out of tape
this is my typeface i made out of tape. As soon as i came up with this style for my typeface i immediately thought of a glitch theme.
My ideas for this typeface actually got me excited, i made a list:
-data bending
-pixel game
-black mirror (tv show)
-government control
-hacking
- tv buzz static
i already knew i wanted this to be my specimen because i have a couple of narratives in mind. i also want this to be an animation or a moving image piece, the effects of the "glitch" will make more sense if its in this format.
pixel game
when i think of this concept for my font i imagine it from pixel games
i just really like the thought of turning my typeface into a game but dark
bandersnatch - black mirror
this captures exactly the vibe i want for my glitch typeface. Not only do i just want to create an animation but a edited moving image piece. I could edit this scene from "bandersnatch" (down below) and edit in the computer being hacked with my typeface.

Abstract: Jonathan Hoefler: Typeface Design, (2019) Netflix
Jonathan Hoefler
Letter fundamentals
Overshoot: To make the letters, for example, c and t the same height the c is drawn so that it is taller than the t. Round letters exceed flat letters
Balance: to make the b seem like the bottom and top halves match they actually need to be drawn differently. So one half will be slightly bigger or smaller
Contrast: to make horizontal and vertical strokes seem thick the vertical is drawn much thicker than the horizontal. This also affects all letters
I liked the scene where Jonathan is in the store looking at watches and quotes Micheal buret an archeologist that finds a bone and from the bone it creates the entire dinosaur. Essentially what this means is that you’ll find old typefaces and then compare it to a modern typeface and you’ll see similarities and how it’s been developed.
In the documentary Jonathan tells us about how he found a form of black letter is rarely or just not used in today’s typefaces. It was disused ever since the 18th century however when it came round the 19th century it was back into use as it got popular as its eccentric. Its also been incorporated in many ways such as: heavy metal, rap, prison tattoos, Catholic Church or satanism. So the font has been revived from the past
“Type design is not just about drawing letters it’s about drawing systems of things” -Jonathan
When presenting his ideas to his team or proposing his ideas he shows the inspiration or what motavated him into wanting to create a type. He shows his team a bunch of watches with the similar typography he wants in the typeface however he mentions often times he hasn’t articulated on what his idea actually is and it’s a process, I liked this because it shows there’s endless possibilities. From this discovery from the typography in the watches he could very well only take a tiny amount of inspiration from it
When an idea doesn’t seem to be working out Jonathan will either push through and hope something happens or he will just completely abandon the idea or the third thing he does is squeeze the Brief a bit harder and add more things into it that might trigger a better idea
Overall I really liked this episode of abtract as it was different to want I normally am interested in. It made me understand more about the designers mentality on how he thinks about typefaces and where he gets inspirations from.
databending
Databending (or data bending) is the process of manipulating a media file of a certain format, using software designed to edit files of another format.
for my typeface i intend to make a poster so i was thinking i could glitch the poster completely and i could do it by data bending.
if i manipulate an image file it will also have a more natural glitch here's an example how to do it:
how to data bend an image
hacking/scammer inspiration for the moving image outcome
for my specimen i had a couple of ideas for a mini story that includes my typeface:
- you're googling something and it suddenly glitches
-youre writing an essay and it suddenly glitches and the computer screen just shuts down
-the government takes over control of your computer
-someone hacks into your computer
-someone smashed the screen and it breaks the computer
