made to persuade

notes taken from the presentation:

what if you could use your skills as a graphic designer to make the world a better place?

-change someone's mind

-change their behaviour

-teach them something or make them happy

In class developing and coming up with my potential idea for this project

below are notes from when i took in class where i was struggling to come up with an idea for this project. This really helped me to open my mind a bit more instead of having a wall up.

i just wanted to add this here because i found it while i visited the tate and i thought that this page could help me on how my scratch cards could actually look appealing towards the visitors on the open day

Scratch card idea - the start

The examples above is what i what the concept to be but not for the game part or winning money. I want my idea to be based on more the idea of revealing and the truth of what underneath the scratch card bit. So that's why i actually don't like the examples above and i want to make it more inviting for the open day.

The history of scratch cards has mostly always been based off the concept of games. "scratch cards have been used for several causes, including charities, federal associations, and as a means of advertising"

maybe just using images and no text? an activity card that reveals something fun. i could have image on top of one scenario for example: a designer creating their work and having no problems and it looks like they're having a great time. However when you scratch out the picture, a "truth" picture underneath is the reality of what it really is to be a designer for example the picture could be them stressing out and having to problem solve.

i could make it cheesy like this and make it more comical

Scratch card idea , Revealing the truth of what it actually takes to be a designer

Although i really liked my idea of including true crime and injustice within the law i think for this project its more suitable if i actually make it based on the open day. My idea with this scratch card is that it reveals the truth of what its actually like to be a designer or i can give advice too.

i was researching for how i could design the scratch card and what it could look like but i came across this in a Micheal Buriet's "how to" book about truth:

IMG_9681.PNG

IMG_9698.jpg

I found this quite interesting as it relates to my earlier ideas, but more importantly i like the idea of the truth. How do you transfer this into a scratch card. I want the truth hidden from the audience first and then revealed.

The background for my scratch card:

as i came across more pages within the same book i was interested in the project where buriet was working with MIT

i was thinking i could have this geometric shape for the background. nothing that stands out to much because the statements need to be legible.

projects that i got intrigued by in the presentation

Screenshot 2020-02-07 at 21.32.34.png

what really drew me towards this is how the designer has resourced his materials from the problem area. I just thought how it was very bold and straight to the point by using the actual oil from the spill, not only is he creating screen prints from it but he used it to donate to organisation which i think is great example of how this project not only raised awareness to environmental uses but it also gave back to the community to help repair the damage.

Screenshot 2020-02-07 at 21.35.52.png

Another awareness project around different situations around the world. What i like about this is similar to the  oil and water poster. personally i haven't seen this issue on any big media outlets so it was nice to see the awareness being spread into something fun and bringing happiness to children.

Screenshot 2020-02-07 at 21.38.09.png

As a film lover myself, this really sparked my interested as i thought how this would've been a great project at the open day as i imagine people would've easily picked up the popcorn as a snack but not only do you get an exchange of food you also get this awareness of the film industry and something that is not very well known to people. She focused on "The Bechdel Test" which if you haven't studied film or looked into woman in films you might've of not been aware about.

ideas i came up with in 15 minutes

this section here with the true crime solving idea is what i felt drawn to the most as i am someone who watches a lot of true crime and is very interested in a lot of cases. I think that i could take this idea into this project. This idea of having some text with some information that's factual but when certain words are scratched out the whole meaning of the information changes.

crime solving idea

when i thought of the crime solving idea i immediately thought of this subscription box called "the murder mystery subscription" its a monthly subscription where every month it gives you a crime or mystery to solve. i had first heard about this subscription when i was watching true crime videos on youtube specifically "Bailey Sarian" a makeup and true crime YouTuber, this is an example of one of her videos  : https://youtu.be/lknCE7fn7k8

Screenshot 2020-02-08 at 18.10.43.png

 How Does It Work?

1. pick your game

2. choose your package

3. recieve your clues

4. solve the mystery

source for the above: https://www.cosykiller.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiA1fnxBRBBEiwAVUouUrsK-66F9B_wmSw8uEH3K-eWJeUJ6qn3xefLUVn226nVT64j3Jrt7BoCapIQAvD_BwE

I think something relating to this idea could be interesting or even the format of the idea of it in a box and i could sell mystery kits at the open day.

This idea might be slightly ambitious as there would be parts to the kit such as:

-do i make up my own crime story?

-do i want to base it off a real true crime?

-real life situations such as law

- i could do cases such as injustice within the law, for example: there is a Netflix series based on a true story and its called "when they see us"

maxresdefault.jpg

synopsis:  based on events of the 1989 Central Park jogger case and explores the lives and families of the five male suspects who were falsely accused then prosecuted on charges related to the rape and assault of a woman in Central Park, New York City.

source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_They_See_Us

"When they see us" trailer: https://youtu.be/u3F9n_smGWY

A very powerful series which really shows how police brutality, racism, and how assumptions where made not only in the series but in the real case too.  that the boys are the obvious suspects, that they “must” have done it just because there where at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think this is important to address that situations like these are still very much alive today. However if i were to create a project out of this idea there would be multiple issues. Its a very sensitive topic and it wouldn't feel right to create some sort of kit/game out of this case.

I feel like this applies to all the true crime cases too. it wouldn't feel right to charge people and to play a mystery game based off real people that have passed or alive.

However i will keep these topics in mind and i could create my made to persuade project in another format with out it being a game

more of what i want:

As i carried on researching for non related lotto designs, i found this scratch card made for a fashion company for a fashion company called uniqlo. What attracted me towards this was it wasn't standing out as much and it has white space within it which makes it look at lot cleaner which is what i want for my idea. Although it does have a game concept still in it, its more for the design i was drawn in. the use of limited colours on the card also makes it look neater and simpler. Even with the amount of typography on it is a lot, there's that white space between the text and the logo.

Heres another design for uniqlo. I was also drawn to this as its straight to the point and it immediately communicates what the scratch card is.

simple and straight to the point. i want my scratch card to have these aspects, as because it's going to be A5 i want to avoid it being overcrowded by colours and text.

how i would actually make the scratch part of my card

another example

visiting shops for display ideas

Magma store

i first visited the magma store as i personally when i looked up the store on google maps i found it quite cute and it just had an independent vibe to it. The red stood out to me and i had never visited this store before. I arrived in holborn station only to get a bit lost because i actually didn't realise how small this shop was. It was so small i walked past it without realising so i went back and finally entered the store. If a store is small that definitely does not mean it has no charm. this sort defiantly had a sense of charm to it, every corner of the store was filled to the brim to something graphic design related. Design covers from left to right and there was so much to depict. my favourite shelves to loo at where the magazines and the photography books. There were just so many aesthetically pleasing designs all set out great together which made it really attract the eye. no empty spaces in the store, every space in the store was incorporated in some way. I felt as if the store was well looked after as they also had these small paper themed christmas displays in the window. Attention to detail was what really made the store feel alive for example the glow from the lighting that appeared from behind the magazines was a really nice touch. it was well used as well as it didn't make the magazine covers seem illegible. Warm tones from the lighting in the store was a good choice to as it made the store feel more cosier and warm.

tate modern gallery shop

My second trip to finding more inspiration for my display was the tate modern gallery shop. Now when visiting here i felt i bit more imtimiated when walking in. This could've been a number of factors:

-the fact that its a famous place

-bigger space

-security at the door

-everything was bright

however this does not mean i didn't take anything from the visit. Also this being a bigger store than magma it did feel like it had lost that independent sense of individualism due to it being in a very famous gallery museum. However when i first stepped in i felt like there was more all the products to breath. everything had its own separate section and different objects went with objects of the same theme. What really helped visiting here though was the fact at the back of the gallery there's a place where you can sit down and read the books and you can rest your book on this triangular zig zag book stand(i will highlight the photo of it below). This is when it clicked in my head that this is what would give my stand structure. I want to build a smaller version of this where i can place my cards on it. I feel like this would attract more interest to my stand and it will make my postcards stand out more. if i only have them laid out on the table it could be very easy to miss as they're only made out of card so they're quite thin.

my idea for my stand display

Screenshot 2020-02-09 at 10.04.49.png

ive incorporated the zigzag/triangular stand and the greetings cards (above this block) display into my idea. this is what i intend it to look like but i might make adjustments.

Screenshot 2020-02-09 at 10.04.29.png

this is how i would display my scratch cards

this display shelf above with the tarot cards i really liked. It just has this sense of orderly chaotic-ness to it. for ideas for my stand when displaying i could make it seem very full like this with stacks of the blue and pink scotch cards all tightly packed together and above the cards there would be a sign explaining what the cards are supposed to do and what their purpose is.
